Parents' Night
Parents' Night may also be
known as Back to School Night in some schools. This is a night
in the beginning of the year where the parents come to the classroom
to meet the teacher and learn about classroom policies and the
yearlong curriculum. Students are not present at this event.
In our school, we have two
identical sessions with parents. The sessions last about 30
minutes each. We have two sessions to help accommodate parents
with more than one child at the school. I created a Power
Point to show at Parents' Night this year. The slides can be
copied onto overheads if you do not have a projector to use.
At Parents' Night, I put
together a table of curriculum resources- books, workbooks, etc.
I also set up a table with sign up sheets for parents to sign up for
bringing items for our class parties throughout the year and for
Parent-Teacher Conference time preferences. On each student's
desk there is a letter to the parents from the student, a packet of
useful information (curriculum, information on the reading
strategies, descriptions of the 6 + 1 Traits of Writing, handwriting
templates and more), a pamphlet on the third grade curriculum
provided by the district and an outline of my presentation.
There are also sign up sheets for parents to be a Wolf's Den
volunteer (this is a program run by parent volunteers to help
students publish their own writing and create books). I also
set out note cards for parents to write questions, comments or
concerns on since I am limited on time. I can address these
specific questions at a later time and date.

Here are some of the
printables and the presentation that I use for Parents' Night:
