W.E.B. Reading

W.E.B. stands for Wonderfully Exciting Books

 What is the W.E.B. program?

The W.E.B. program is designed to enhance the enjoyment of reading as well as provide a space to openly reflect upon what your child has read. The objective of this program is to have your child reading books and other materials, such as newspapers, magazines, comic books, etc. and working toward comprehension and understanding while having fun.  Each week your child will meet with one of our W.E.B. volunteers and discuss the reading material(s) and/or book(s) that he or she has been reading.   The W.E.B. volunteers will talk with your child about what he/she read and ask them some questions, inquiring about such subjects as the setting, main characters, his or her favorite part and more.

What are the expectations of the W.E.B. program?

The expectation is that each child will read for at least 100 minutes each week.  That averages 20 minutes a day, with weekends off.  You can divide up the minutes however you choose, which may or may not include reading on the weekend. Your child is always welcome to go above and beyond the reading minutes required.  Please sign the W.E.B. log each week.  Either you or your child may enter the book name, genre, type and minutes spent reading each night.  Thank you for your help and cooperation.

What should my child read?

Any reading material will count toward your child’s W.E.B. reading minutes.  This includes, but is not limited to books, magazines, newspapers and poems. Please help your child select material that is age appropriate and at your child independent reading level (if he/she is reading the book independently). You may count books that you read to your child, or ones that your child listens to on tape/cd/computer.  Please make sure that the material is age appropriate. Books that your child reads on Raz-Kids will also count towards his/her weekly minutes. If your child chooses a book, he/she should continuously read this book from beginning to end.  When your child finishes a book, he or she should engage in a new book or other reading material of his or her choice.  Your child may be asked to share a favorite part, passage or detail from his/her W.E.B. reading that week, so please have your child bring his/her book or other reading material to school on the designated W.E.B. meeting day.

What is the "Genre of the Month"?

Each month will feature a different “Genre of the Month”.  Your child is encouraged to explore reading materials from a variety of genres throughout the school year.  This does not mean that your child can only read books from this genre for W.E.B., but if your child reads at least one piece from the featured genre of the month, your child will earn a bonus prize or reward at the end of the month.  You can learn more about the "Genre of the Month" here.
